LYNNHAVEN HOUSE

Built circa 1725, by Francis Thelaball, the Lynnhaven House is one of the Virginia Beach Historic Homes at which our members can serve as docents. The house is furnished as a historic museum to interpret the period Francis Thelaball and his family lived there. Architectural and design details suggest the builder was concerned with quality as well as artistry.

MUTTS WITH A MISSION

Mutts with a Mission is a nonprofit organization in Virginia Beach that trains service dogs for veterans. One of our chapter goals is to help support their mission. Sage, or is that Pearl, honored us by visiting one of our chapter meetings.

HAMPTON VETERANS HOSPITAL

The Spinal Cord Injury Unit at the Hampton Veterans Hospital uses BINGO games as part of patient rehabilitation. We collect snacks and canteen coupon books for use as Bingo prizes.

WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA

Our members participate in Wreaths Across America ceremonies, identifying and marking veterans’ grave sites, placing wreaths, and returning to remove them. Those who take part say it is a very moving and fulfilling experience.

VETERANS’ COFFEE HOUR

Daughters in our chapter regularly visit a local assisted living community for a Veterans’ Coffee Hour. Complete with fresh scones and coffee the atmosphere is filled with laughter and smiles all around

UNITED SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS

The chapter assists the USO by collecting snacks and bottled water for the USO Lounge at Norfolk International Airport. The lounge is used by military personnel and their dependants as they come and go through the Norfolk location.

VETERANS DAY PARADE

The Princess Anne County Chapter recognizes Veterans Day by marching with other DAR chapters in the annual parade at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. Spectators love the American flags we hand out.

VETERANS CARE CENTER

The Jones & Cabacoy Veterans Care Center in Virginia Beach is brand-new. Our chapter has commissioned a local artist to paint portraits of the two veterans for whom the center is named. We are raising money to have the paintings professionally framed and hung in the lobby.

250th ANNIVERSARY of the BOSTON TEA PARTY

To recognize the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, we invited the local SAR (Sons of the American Revolution) chapter and the veterans at a retirement center to a Saturday morning tea. Our members outdid themselves with goodies to go with the tea, and we revisited a bit of Revolutionary War history.

YORKTOWN CUSTOM HOUSE

The Princess Anne County Chapter, NSDAR, supports the Yorktown Custom House in Yorktown, Virginia. Built in 1720, and used as a barracks for Virginia Militia Troops during the Revolutionary War, it is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

FERRY PLANTATION HOUSE

Princess Anne County Chapter joined with the other three Virginia Beach DAR chapters to apply for - and receive - a grant to place a marker at the Ferry Plantation House in Virginia Beach for the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution in 2026. The marker will recognize the historic significance of this property.

GENEALOGY PROGRAM

Chapter members with genealogy training are making videos so other members can learn how to use the resources, too. The DAR has a large inventory of online videos and training programs to complement what our chapter does.

PATRIOT RECORDS PROJECT

The goal of the NSDAR’s Patriot Records Project is to transfer more than 70 years of handwritten documents from the late 1700s to electronic files, thus allowing better access to ancestry information. Some of our members like this project because they can do important historical work in the comfort of their own homes. Those who participate are eligible to wear the Patriot Records Project pin.

LYNNHAVEN HOUSE

A National Historic Landmark and one of the oldest surviving brick houses in the United States, the Lynnhaven House was a working plantation and represents the lifestyle of middle-class colonial Virginia. Our chapter members can volunteer as docents at any of the Virginia Beach Historic Homes Museums.

*** EDUCATION ***

CONSTITUTION WEEK

Each year in September during Constitution Week, our chapter presents programs and distributes packets of information about the U.S. Constitution to both public and private schools in Virginia Beach.

NATURALIZATION CEREMONIES

Our chapter hosts and takes part in Naturalization Ceremonies at the Walter E. Hoffman Federal Courthouse in Norfolk, Virginia. We provide and distribute programs and small American flags and welcome participants to the ceremony. We also sponsor naturalization ceremonies at a United States military base in Japan.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION

We encourage our members to scan their grocery receipts and donate their Box Tops for Education points to one of the DAR-sponsored schools. At www.boxtops4education.com they can download an app to see each school’s wish list.

Click the blue button below to learn more about the DAR schools.

LIBRARY WEEK

During Library Week our Chapter delivers thank-you bags to librarians in schools and public libraries in Virginia Beach. This year they included one-of-a-kind bookmarks designed by a chapter member plus pens, pencils, and more.
